The Sisterhood is a place to bring your cup of coffee to. Heck, bring the whole pot :). Sit down, relax, and fall in for a while. No divas or meanies allowed. It's about boy brain, kiddos, food, one crazy labrador, autism and a cat in recovery from a back tire incident. Oh the places you'll go :)

Reasons To Love Autism: Moment # 68

on September 24, 2012

My boy: Mom, is it okay if I go climbing?

Mom: Sure, buddy  (And I say yes because I like to say yes as much as possible but, even as I’m saying it, all I can think of is that we don’t have any climbable trees at our house.)

Mom: You’re climbing at our house right?  (because I need some clarification.)

My boy: Uh huh.  I’ll be in the backyard.

I have to admit I was wildly intrigued.  All we have are palm trees and, at least in my day, palm trees were NOT for climbing.  So, instead of questioning the fun out of his independence and motivation, I watch.  I look out my window into the backyard and I see this crazy thing unfolding.

My boys ARE climbing palm trees but they are much more ingenious than I ever was.  Where I climbed only with my bare hands as a child of the 70’s would naturally do, these boys are smarter and more creative than I ever was.  They have a hammer and rope in hand and they know how to use them.  Scary on one hand, I’ll give you that, but crazy clever on the other.

By wrapping and knotting the rope into a harness of sorts and by using the claw end of the hammer to dig into the palm, the boys have devised a way to climb the palm trees much like a mountain climber would climb a mountain.  And, mom is absolutely wowed by their creative ingenuity.  I would never have dreamed of it and yet they are doing it.

How can you not love autism when the boy figures out how to climb a palm tree (something this tree climber cannot do) with rope and a HAMMER?  Boy brain and autism are good together.  Scary good in fact ;).
